Guide to Jewish Cemetery Preservation in Western Ukraine

This website provides information and guidance to assist leaders, activists, and volunteers in the care and rehabilitation of Jewish cemeteries in western Ukraine. Included here are “best practices” (processes, methods, tools), plus a collection of resources (texts, websites, videos) relevant to the work, selected case studies of local and other cemetery projects, and links to independent organizations working to document Jewish cemeteries in the region. Although the guide has been developed for the specific needs of Jewish cemeteries in western Ukraine, portions of it may benefit individuals, organizations, and projects beyond the region and in other areas of heritage preservation and care. The information has been pulled from a broad variety of foreign and domestic resources working in a number of different disciplines.

Obchody 77. rocznicy powstania w Treblince

„Niedaleko od garażu unosił się słup ognia” – wspominał więzień Treblinki, Samuel Willenberg. – „W szatańskim jakby tańcu płonęły niemieckie baraki. Wyschnięte gałęzie sosny wplecione w płot płonęły jak wąż, który ciągnie za sobą ognisty ogon. Cała Treblinka stanęła w płomieniach”. Był 2 sierpnia 1943 roku. W 77.

Rohatyn Jewish Heritage

Despite travel and meeting restrictions during the current global pandemic, we are pleased to report this week that volunteers have completed a first round of cutting and clearing wild vegetation at Rohatyn’s two Jewish cemeteries. Unusually wet weather with many days of storm and rain through the spring and summer to date forced the work to extend much longer than usual, even while the heavy grasses and fast-growing shrubs continued to rise, but the volunteers have prevailed and were able to finish the first full round of clearing this week. Marla and I have been frustrated by the ongoing travel restrictions which have kept us away from our home in Lviv, and unable to join the work so far this year, but we are glad that our Ukrainian friends in the area have stepped forward to help so that the vegetation does not run wild as it did prior to our first clearing work in 2018.

W najbliższych miesiącach zapraszamy do słuchania wykładów, do których zaprosiliśmy wybitnych badaczy i badaczki. Nasi goście przybliżą temat konferencji w kontekście najbardziej bieżącym – trwającej pandemii. Ich wykłady będą dotyczyły żydowskich odpowiedzi na epidemie w ujęciu historycznym i współczesnym i będą nawiązywać do głównych tematów konferencji - nowych źródeł, metodologii badawczych i zmian paradygmatów w studiach żydowskich. Mamy nadzieję, że poprzez naszą serię oddamy głos środowisku i zajmiemy stanowisko, wobec tego, jak humanistyka może odpowiedzieć na niezwykłą sytuację, w której się wszyscy znaleźliśmy.

Jewish Cemeteries of Rohatyn

In our article on Jewish traditions for death, burial, and mourning, we note that in Jewish law, a cemetery is a holy place more sacred even than a synagogue, and that the care of cemeteries is an essential religious and social responsibility. Rohatyn’s Jewish leaders established two cemeteries to serve the community, the first in the 17th century and the second in the 20th century.
