Yossi Klein Halevi: Our season of reckoning: Israel’s moral crossroads in Gaza

As we head into the Jewish season of self-reckoning, many of us are struggling to make moral sense of this new era that began on October 7.
To be an ambivalent Jew today is not to be uncertain so much as torn between conflicting certainties. We know Israel’s war against Iran and its proxies is unavoidable. We know any nation in our place would have reacted to Hamas’s mass atrocities as we did. We know we face an enemy willing to commit any crime and that the IDF is fighting under conditions that would test the moral limits of any army. We know the young Israelis who have fought for months, many for nearly two years, are among the most heroic and self-sacrificing this country has produced. We know Israel is subject to a relentless campaign of lies, half-truths, distortions and convenient omissions. We know the outrageous accusation of genocide against Israel only diverts the world’s focus from radical Islamism, the truly genocidal side in this conflict.

This had to be done

Power is not the answer to all problems. But neither is restraint. If you have the power to prevent the world’s biggest exporter of terrorism from developing nuclear immunity yet fail to use it, then disarm, embrace pacifism, and prepare to suffer the consequences.

Is anti-Zionism antisemitism? It doesn’t matter

While there is an obvious overlap between antisemitism and other forms of hatred against the “other,” Jew-hatred is unique. No other antipathy to any group has such deep historical roots, beginning in pagan Egypt and the Hellenistic world, where the Jewish refusal to acknowledge the divinity of kings was regarded as intolerable arrogance and monotheism as an affront to the “religious pluralism” of the gods. No other hatred is so adaptable to seemingly any ideology and circumstance.

7.10 - okoliczność i kontekst

On psuje całość dyskursu publicznego i potrafi bardzo utrudnić działania edukacyjne.

Featured Post Crush Hamas or free hostages? I choose the hostages

When the immediacy of the horrors of October 7 begins to fade, the trauma that will linger in the Israeli psyche is the shattering of two core assumptions about our country.
The first was the belief that we know how to defend ourselves and project deterrence in a hostile region. But on October 7, the weakest of our enemies delivered the most devastating blow in our history, sending a message of unprecedented vulnerability to our enemies.

What Matters Now to Yossi Klein Halevi: 5 big questions about the war

Excerpts from a Behind the Headlines video interview with author and journalist Yossi Klein Halevi, conducted exclusively for Times of Israel Community.
"Drawing on themes from both of those books, as well as his other work, we asked Klein Halevi to answer five big questions about the war. We touch on topics including what “Never Again” means to Israelis today and how the Jewish community should relate to the anti-Zionist Jewish youth protesting on university campuses."
