Cross purposes: Catholicism and the Political Imagination in Poland

In her most recent study ‘Cross-Purposes. Catholicism and the Political Imagination in Poland’, published by Cambridge University Press earlier this year, historian Dr Magdalena Waligórska retraces the significance of religious imagery in shaping Polish political culture in the 20th century in general, and the way the Catholic majority positioned itself towards the Polish-Jewish community. In her talk, the author will focus on prominent instances of these symbolic interactions, such as the Smolensk cross defense of 2010. The event will be chaired by Professor François Guesnet.

Magdalena Waligórska, Ph.D., Humboldt University Berlin, is a cultural historian and sociologist; fields of interest include contemporary Polish and Belarusian history, nationalism, Jewish heritage and popular culture, and Jewish/non-Jewish relations.

François Guesnet is Professor of Modern Jewish History at University College London. He specializes in Eastern European Jewish History and is co-chair of the editorial board of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry. His book publications include Polnische Juden im 19. Jahrhundert (Vienna, Cologne, 1998), and, as editor, Warsaw. The Jewish Metropolis (2015, paperback 2017). A collected volume Sources on Jewish Self-Government in the Polish Lands from Its Inception to the Present is forthcoming (Boston, Leiden: 2022).
