Whose Jesus? Jewish Perspectives on Jesus of Nazareth

This article examines the development of Jewish interpretations of Jesus of Nazareth within the broader framework of Jewish-Christian dialogue. Employing histori-cal-critical and intellectual-historical methods, the study traces the emergence of Jewish scholarship on Jesus from the eighteenth century to the present. It argues that Jewish engagement with Jesus was closely connected with efforts by Jewish thinkers to redefine Jewish identity within societies shaped by Christian dominance. The article concludes that the Jewish quest for the historical Jesus has become an important stimulus for contempo-rary Christology and for the deepening of interreligious dialogue.

In December, the Christosemitism team convened via Zoom with a distinguished group of scholars, under the leadership of Prof. Gavin D’Costa from The Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). The primary focus of this gathering was a disucssion of Marianne Moyaert’s seminal work, Christian Imaginations of the Religious Other: A History of Religionization (Hoboken, NJ: Wiley Blackwell, 2024). This book serves as a critical exploration of the intricate relationship between Christianity and the perception of religious others throughout history.

It is not often that a conference on a sixty-year-old conciliar document feels as urgent as breaking news. Yet I felt that “Nostra Aetate in Their Age and in Ours” (November 18–20, 2025), held between Notre Dame Jerusalem (Tantur) and the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University, did precisely that: it brought the theological revolution of Vatican II into direct confrontation with the wounds and dilemmas of the present moment. The conference was sponsored by the Christosemitism ERC Project, the University of Notre Dame, the Cardinal Bea Centre for Judaic Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and The Center for the Study of Christianity at the Hebrew University ofJerusalem.

The SEELISBERG PRIZE is named in memory of the ground-breaking gathering that occurred in the small Swiss village of Seelisberg from 30 July to 5 August 1947 to address perennial Christian teachings of contempt for Jews and Judaism. It issued the very influential "A Call to the Churches: The Ten Points of Seelisberg" which is widely recognized as inaugurating the transformation in relations between Jews and Christians that has unfolded over the past seventy years/p>
